Adding custom aerial to scenery project

Hello everyone,

I’ve been working on my first scenery project for MSFS 2024, and I’m currently trying to add custom aerial imagery to the scenery.

I’ve looked through YouTube tutorials, forums, and other documentation, but unfortunately I haven’t been able to find a clear guide specifically explaining how to add custom aerial imagery. I also tried using AI to help me with the workflow in QGIS.

I managed to import the CGL into my project and build the package, but after building, all of the aerial imagery appears red and scrambled in the simulator.

I would really appreciate some guidance on the correct workflow for creating and adding custom aerial imagery to MSFS 2024.

If anyone could point me towards a tutorial, documentation, or explain the correct steps, I would be very grateful.

I can also provide screenshots, my QGIS settings, the CGL files, or any other information that might help troubleshoot the issue.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hello @jerreliscool

You can start here: CGL Files

Also, a sample is distributed with the SDK: SimpleAerial

I could help, but I would need you to include download links or attachments of the image… Did you use QGIS’ tile downloading? That could be a problem.

yes i used QGIS for several things such as generating XYZ tiles of KVNY since the ingame imagery is outdated and i wanted to use the googlemaps imagery instead. i would really appreciate your help!

i also used this tutorial MSFS20 - A small tutorial on new method of making custom ground texture (CGL) - no georeferencing needed | FSDeveloper

The linked tutorial is very good. I do something similar, but I don’t use QGIS to make tiles.

gtiff2quad

This takes a geotiff and creates the quad tiles directly, so no need for any other apps. Just load the geotiff and out pops the needed quad-named tiles ready for compiling.

If this doesn’t work, i would need a link to your geotiff.

yes thank you,
the python program makes it a whole lot easier to generate the quadkeys for my imagery. i am still figuring out what I have to do after I pasted the images in the correct folder. is there any tutorial you know about i can follow. I found some old links on websites/posts but most of the videos seem to be deleted?
thank you for all the help!

The SDK has a sample for an aerial images project.

thank you that helped a lot. now i have one last problem how do i fix the coloring of the imagery?

thank you in advance @rhumbaflappy goat!

I find that you need a big gamma increase to get my aerials to match the sim. You might have to experiment with this, if your editor has a gamma correction aim for 1.5 to 1.8.

I remember Asobo mentioning this at one point, but I can’t find it, someone might have a more accurate setting.

This is what I use for quick color matching tiffs to MSFS:
