Blender 4.5 Does Not Allow To Export NLAs And Unpushed Animations Together

Version: 1.XX.XX.X

Frequency: Consistently

Severity: High
(Low - quality of life, workflow optimization, rare enough to not impact production, etc…
High - critical but workarounds are available, important feature not working as expected, frequent enough to impact production
Blocker - prevents from working on the project, prevents from releasing the product)

Marketplace package name: if applicable

Context: What package? When editing or mounted from Community? In main menu or in flight? etc…

Bug description: In the past it was possible to get both NLAs and animations that have not been pushed down successfully by using action mode in the exporter. With blender 4.5 I can only get either NLA or unpushed animation to export correctly but there seems to be no way to get both types exported. Is there any way to address this? Sometimes it might make sense to not push down an animation for easier editing in the future. Having a way to export both types would be crucial in my opinion.

Hello @b1e1n7e ,

On my end, I can’t reproduce the issue; both animations are exported:

What steps are you taking to reproduce this?

Hey Romain,

in your video you have exported both a nla and a non nla animation?
There is also this report which mentioned nla tracks no longer exporting correctly when doing it with animation mode in the exporter set to actions.

To be clear, when talking about non nla animation I mean one that has not been pushed down to an nla track yet, so keyframes still accessible.

Yes, I have one NLA track pushed down and one that isn’t:

I’ll investigate further on my end and keep you posted.

Are you working with the latest exporter? Mine is still from SU6 so that is something I could try on my end. Maybe something has changed in the meantime.
The exact blender version I am using is 4.5.14 LTS.

Regards Benedict

I found the issue: exporting using NLA Tracks isn’t working for animations that aren’t pushed down.
The bug has been logged on our end.
Thanks for the heads-up!

On my end it is going both ways. With animation mode set to action I can only get non pushed animations to export correctly. Previously this mode allowed both types to export successfully. Animation mode set to NLA has always only worked for NLA tracks as far as I remember.

Yes, I’m using SDK 1.8.1 and Blender 4.5.7 LTS.
Could you try updating to the latest SDK version and let me know if it’s still not working?

The issue that is referenced to me was reported to Khronos a while back. It may have some relavance.

Hey Romain,

I was not successful with the latest exporter. Might be related to the fact that I have several animations using the same nla name.

Benedict

Hello @b1e1n7e ,

Could you please send us your scene file?
I can’t reproduce the issue on my end.

Hey Romain,

I would need to specifically prepare such a file and at the moment unfortunately I dont have the capacities. @DA40CGDFQ maybe you still have a testing file from when you first confirmed the bug months ago?

Regards Benedict

I tested this in SDK 1.8.1 exporter 8.4.0

Seems to work for me.

If you have non-NLA animations your settings must be Actions. (NLA will not export non-NLA animation) Both are exported with Actions.

EDIT: I did not test to see if the animations worked - just exported - as I always use NLA

Also ensure that the ACTION Name is set to the corresponding animation name in your XML. See the Gear_Centermain animation name in relation to the c_gear NLA name.

@DA40CGDFQ Did you export several nlas using the same nla name with animation mode set to actions and test it inside the sim?
As you had described it in your bug report the bug is specifically related to several nlas with the same naming being exported with mode actions. On my end I can then only get one of the nlas to work and all others are dead.

This is the reason I only make animations and push them all to NLA’s. I am curious as to why you don’t. What am I missing?

EDIT:

In fact pushing them down - allows you to edit the animations, while not pushing them down does not.

Muti animated parts with the same name - need to be pushed to NLA tracks. - Also naming animations with out NLAs means you need to name the action.

I´m not sure where we are misunderstanding each other, I have an animation that consists of several objects moving differently and each individual object was animated and pushed to an nla. All nlas share the same name but with the lastest exporter only one of those nlas will work.

Working for me - this is why ASOBO needs an example from you.

you described in your bug report that upon export the nla name is longer being used to identify the animation instead the action name seems to be the identifier, so as last test I will rename all the action names of the nla tracks

Hello @b1e1n7e ,

Could you please provide a minimal test scene demonstrating this issue?
Because i still can’t reproduce the issue.

Hey Romain,

I just prepared a quick test file that I have linked to the private content group, please make sure to use the exact same blender version (4.5.14) when testing and the export settings below.

no baking and no sampling

The animations were then implemented in a fully 24 native xml using the ASOBO_GT_Anim_Code_Template.
