Controllers being recognised as tobii eye tracker

Various controllers are being replaced by tobii eye tracker in SU5.

I am the manufacturer of Fulcrum Simulator Controls yokes and throttles. These are USB HID devices that appear as a standard joystick device in any game or sim. I have had multiple reports from customers reporting this issue. Outside of the sim, the device appears in windows joystick control panel and works as expected. They also work in other games without issue. Before SU5 they worked correctly in MSFS2024.
Since late SU5 betas and in the release version tobii eye tracker as been appearing in place of the controller.
I have had reports from multiple customers with this issue so it is not just related to one system.

I have searched the forums and can see that this is also an issue with other users with a variety of controllers including xbox game controllers and others.
Here are some forum links of others with the same issue:

It seems there is a wider problem with the implementation of tobii with SU5 that is breaking the function of hardware controllers.

Hello @Tutmeister

So your hardware is listed as “Tobii” in the “Device List” section of the control settings, right?
Did you replicate this yourself or this is only being reported by some customers so far?

We are tracking an issue with some software like VJoy being listed as Tobii in the sim.
Possibly, your customers facing this problem are using VJoy or similar software?
Let us know if that’s something you can confirm with them.

I’ll keep an eye on the issue that’s being tracked on our side and will let you know when a fix candidate is deployed.

Sylvain

Correct, the hardware is listed as tobii and users are unable to set up the controls with different aircraft. When they click on the tobii controller it show there are no axis detected for that controller.

I am unable to replicate it myself on the MS store version but I have customers on that version and steam reporting the issue. I have had them test by removing all over devices and still seeing this problem. From the forum I can see that there are other cases, even with one user with an xbox controller.

Just for clarity, Fulcrum products do not require and other software or drivers to work. They are just a HID device and appear as a simple joystick. This is definitely a problem for us as it is affecting customers of our products.

Could you and one of your impacted customers please take a screenshot of your USB device properties:

  • Right click the Windows start button
  • Click on “Device Manager”
  • Right click on the relevant device in the “Human Interface Device” section and click “Properties”
  • Select the “Details” tab
  • Select “Hardware Ids” in the drop list
  • Screenshot the window

Knowing which PID is used and if it’s different for your impacted customers would help us understand the problem better.

Regards,
Sylvain

Will do, the pid and vid on my test system are as below. I have emailed all affected customers to check their pids and vids.

Thanks

The problem seems to be since SU5, any usb device that has a vid and pid of 0000 now shows up as tobii in the sim. Some very early yokes of ours seem to have 0000 as both pid and vid. Later ones have our own pid and vid programmed.

As a test, i flashed a controller with 0000 for pid and vid and immediately the sim saw it as a tobii device. When I changed it to our correct pid and vid, it reverted to seeing it as a Fulcrum Yoke.

So, aside from some of our early yokes having the wrong pid and vid which we will address with customers, it seems that for whatever reason, something has changed in 2024 in how it recognises controllers.

Before SU5, it seemed to recognise controllers as windows does, just like 2020 and just about every other game you can think of where the device appears with the name it show up as in the joystick control panel.

This will be why you are now getting problems with more unusual or non mainstream controllers that may be using 0000 for pids and vids. Might be worth looking at changing whatever affected this back.

We will address our customers controller issues either way but I think you should investigate this for other users.

Hello @Tutmeister

That’s the problem then, Tobii also uses pid 0. We have identified a similar conflict with VJoy that also uses 0 as pid and is listed as Tobii as well.
So this is already tracked on our side. I have informed the team your device is also impacted and will let you know when a fix is available.

Sylvain
