CTD possibly related to VR device disconnection

I’ve been having this problem since a few versions, even without doing anything, with the airplane idling on a gate and nothing going on, the following happens:

  • The PC CPU utilization goes down to about 10%
  • The whole MSFS is frozen and listed as “Busy” in the Task Manager
  • After a few minutes, the game eventually CTDs

My suspect the long pause is because I have full crash dump enabled, so maybe the time it takes from it starts to be frozen to the actual crash is caused by the dump file creation (I have 64GB of RAM, so the file is big).

I think it must be related to VR, since running the .dmp file in WinDbg reports this in the stack trace:

Yesterday the problem happened at every session after a few minutes, and I found this was associated with a crash in the Windows Event Viewer of the Playstation VR2 PC app that is installed through Steam. I uninstalled it, and at first this seemed to have fixed the problem, because I was able to run the sim for a longer time without crashes.

However, today it crashed again even without the PS VR2 app installed, but I still have the Oculus software installed since I also have a Quest 3 which is not connected, so maybe that’s also a factor.

I’m suspecting it might be related to VR drivers for peripherals that are not connected.

Find here the full crash dump file:

After lots of testing, I’m not sure it’s related to VR (I uninstalled everything related to VR, didn’t fix it), it seems just a normal graphic problem and I’m fairly sure it’s FSR3 Frame Generation, since I now running MSFS for several hours straight with that disabled, and I have no crashes anymore.

“Smart docking system” has always been disabled, so it’s not that, it’s just FSR3 Frame Generation. I’m using latest nVidia drivers 595.79, already tried clearing shaders (both nVidia and MSFS), no change, the only thing that seems to fix it is disabling FSR3 Frame Generation.

Got several identical CTDs today, this after idling for some time on an airport parking without doing anything, airplane is the default A320, here’s the new memory dump:

Hello @Umberto67 ,

Based on the dump file, this does not seem to be related to DevMode or the SDK.
Could you try clearing your flight plan and check whether the issue still occurs?

Regards,
Boris

I didn’t had a flightplan, unless selecting just a departure airport to spawn there also counts as a flight plan.

It seems more like a generic video driver crash, I posted it on the users forum and found another user with the same fault offset in the Event Viewer, so I suggested to create a full memory dump:

This user comment seems to suggest his CTDs were fixed by creating a Flight plan:

I never created a flight plan, just select the departure airport and gate. Could this be the problem ?

I want to add, I am getting constant CTDs on SU5 7.11, mostly after hitting compile on the project.. and bang.. CTD with event 00005 in the event viewer.

Most the time the workflow is, change something in the project (.XML or WASM, compile WASM) hit compile in the project, after the 2-3 rd compile it goes CTD..

Unable to work on the current SU5 build, I reverted to SU4, and able to work properly.. I can compile all night and never get CTDs on SU4.

R.

Hello

A fix was integrated in the last flighting SU5 1.7.16.0.

Can you confirm this is now working as expected ?

Regards,
Boris

Yes, version 1.7.16.0 is far more stable, and I haven’t got that crash anymore.
