Drawing of PaintedLine objects - Node Bug

Version: SU3 Beta - 1.5.26.0

Frequency: Consistently

Severity: High

Context: When editing any kind of scenery package in the SDK

Bug description: Ever since I can remember, in FS2024, I’ve experienced two, for me, breaking issues that I encounter when making airport scenery packages.

Issue number 1 - When adding painted lines into my scenery, after a while, once clicking the ‘add’ button in the objects window, instead of a red dot appearing, for me to use the CTRL+Click command to start drawing points

I end up with the following, as soon as I click add, it behaves like I’ve created a node

The adding of new nodes, including that when I’m creating new aprons, is accompanied by severe lag. I can see no reasonable explanation for this, as I have a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, 64GB 6000mhz RAM and an RTX 5090, that’s using a PCI-E Gen5 SSD for storage.

It almost feels like the lag spike when adding the nodes, causes the SDK to skip the input of the Add button, and almost treat it like a double click.

Please can someone provide any input on this, as it’s causing me to want to stop development in FS2024 due to how frustrating it is. Is there any extra troubleshooting I can do? Settings to change? It would be MASSIVELY appreciated!

Repro steps:

Attempt to add painted line objects, and use the CTRL+Click workflow to add extra nodes. The issue occurs whether editing existing projects, or when using completely new ones. There is no rhyme or reason to why it occurs.

Hello @morganthomas757

I wasn’t able to replicate this so far.
Can you please enable the “Display FPS” debug when you do your video capture?

Regards,
Sylvain

Hi Sylvain,

Yes I will do this when I am at home during the day tomorrow. I’ve also taken it upon myself to reinstall FS2020 to see if this issue occurs on that platform too. (I don’t remember it being the case, but good for comparison I guess.

Hi Sylvain,

Please see video below, with Display FPS enabled. The painted line bug didn’t happen this time, but hopefully you can see what I mean about the severe stutter when adding nodes.

Does it happen if you:

  • do the same in an empty scenery project?

  • enable the “Update game renders on mouse release” view option of the Scenery Editor?

I’ve attempted that, but the same issue with an empty project + that option enabled.

@darwikey Any insight?

Hi @morganthomas757,
What are your graphic settings ?
Can you try to hide vegetation and vegetation details in the “rendering” menu of the editor ?

Regards,
Xavie / Asobo

My graphics settings are 4K, with TAA and Frame Generation on. All graphics settings are maxed out apart from Depth of Field and Motion Blur.

In my experience and from what others have suggested previously, hiding the vegetation options in the rendering menu makes little to no difference to the lag experienced.

Bump on this as I’ve been using the SDK the last few days and still encountering the issue. Are there any troubleshooting steps I can take, as I can’t believe this would be a problem that only I have. I’ve not heard anyone mention similar.

Hello @morganthomas757

We are investigating possible causes for this.
Does setting the “Rock” advanced graphics setting to “Off” makes a difference?

Regards,
Sylvain

Hi, I gave this a try to turn off the Rock setting in graphics, but it seems to make no major difference to the overall experience. Still pinning my CPU at 100% when drawing painted lines.

Hello @morganthomas757

Any improvement following the change on SU4 beta described here?

Regards,
Sylvain

Hi Sylvain,

Apologies, haven’t checked the forums much recently. I can say that the rendering options skipping the updates definitely helps with the lag when moving certain nodes around. Thanks
