Grass Issues!

Bug description:
It’s impossible to place grass on or near anywhere that the sim deems as a road.


This is a huge pain as filling up partitions in the middle of a road with grass is now impossible. In FS20 there was a workaround I used, which entailed placing an apron underneath the intended grass with the specific material “GrassGround01” and setting its opacity to 0.
When doing this the intended grass would appear above, but this no longer work in FS24.

It is the same whether using an apron or polygon, except polygons have an additional problem, which is that they dig into the ground for no reason

Repro steps:
Try to place a grass apron or polygon in the middle of a road.

@Boris anything on this? Its a huge issue. I have tons of area where should be, but it’s impossible to get grass there…

@Boris I’m afraid not. Besides apron now excluding grass beneath nothing is working as intended. At first this area had no grass at all by default. Now by default this area without a grass texture looks like this.


When i add the grass texture at full opacity it looks like this…

I get 1 or two more blades, when i’m actually aiming for something like this…

The grass has no density, the grass in Fs20 when placing an apron/polygon is much fuller.

Other areas i still get nothing at all when i place grass at full opacity. I’ve tried changing the grass textures and biomes, still nothing.



@Boris what’s the limitation stopping us from getting more specific separate grass parameters. LIke,
-the ability to turn off the underlying texture
-grass height
-grass density(separate from the texture opacity)

There seem to be at least two topics mixed together here.

From what I could observe so far, grass in MSFS2024 seems to be drawn in clusters (or blocks or whatever you want to call them), so if I’m not mistaken, sharp corners are not possible anymore. I’d be gladly corrected if wrong about this. Also see this post where observations about this (MSFS2020 vs. MSFS2024) have been shared:

It is not clear yet how particular grass types can be called other than via biomes (which - on the other hand - are not fully supported yet). See my most I made about that yesterday:

I think there are two subjects here:

In MSFS2020, we used the terrain color to spawn grass.
In MSFS2024, grass spawning depends on the tile surface type.
This means that if the detected surface type is something like “Building_And_Concrete”, you won’t see grass in that area.
→ However, we can override this by using a material with the “surface type” set to “grass”, which will force grass to spawn.

So the first thing to check is that the material you’re using has surface type = grass (in the Material Editor).

The second point is that no grass will spawn on a road.
What we fixed is the road exclusion, which was not working properly before (grass would not respawn when a road was excluded).
Now, if you exclude the road, grass will return if you place a polygon with surface type = grass on top of it.

For now, we don’t have an option to control the density or size of the grass.

I checked in MSFS2020 and noticed that some materials used for grass had no surface type defined, which could explain why some MSFS2020 packages no longer have grass in MSFS2024.
These materials will be fixed, but likely for SU3.

In that photo there is mainly to type of texture on the ground. One over the taxiway and one for the dirt/grass. You’re saying if i put a road exclude it’ll make the texture over the taxiway disappear? If so that’s not working for me, and its that textures that preventing my grass from showing. Everywhere that texture is i can cant get grass to grow.

In this photo i have the road excluded and I used a grass texture i know that works.


Still no grass in that area.

The grass not spawing around a taxiway is another issue and it’s already logged in our backlog :wink:

Any chance all these grass issue will be fixed for SU2? They’re really important on my and i’m sure many other scenery dev’s list.

A fix has been deployed in SU3 (currently in flighting) regarding the grass material surface type.
Can you confirm whether it now behaves as expected on your end?

Yes i can now place grass anywhere i like. So it seems to be fixed for me. However by default grass is still not growing around taxiways, it has the same texture that it over the roads, would be great if we get that solved for SU3 as well. But at least now i can place the grass manually.
