Ground giving the incorrect runway for takeoff

I have built a custom airport and I am happy with my results except for one “problem” I am having with my GROUND ATC , I have winds of 22kts at 230 deg and tower directs me to take off on runway 24 instead of 06 which I think should be the runway of choice.

Have I missed a property somewhere?

Thanx guys

24 would be correct - your wind is coming FROM 230 degrees i.e. blowing FROM the West (approx) so you want to take off on the runway FACING West (approx) which would be runway 24

Thanx Bud , I did some more research and found this;

An object pointing into the wind at 240° would be pointing into a southwest wind. To determine this, you need to find the opposite direction of the wind’s source, which is 240°-180°= 60°. So, an object pointing into a wind of 240° is pointing into a 60° or east-northeast wind.

So wouldn’t runway 6 be the one to take off from? or am I misunderstanding the 240 deg part as wind from behind or is it read as wind from the front?

You are correct that runway “06” points North East. It makes sense given your compass will be pointing NE / 060 degrees as you take off or come in to land.

A wind FROM 240 degrees (i.e. a WIND 240) is coming FROM the South West. You do not want to take runway 06, and fly North East, to fly into a wind coming FROM the South West, that would be a tail wind. Since time immemorial a “North Wind” comes FROM the North, a “West Wind” comes FROM the West. Translate those into degrees and it’s a bit more confusing because you don’t have the history, but a “West Wind” is “Wind 270”.

So the simple rule would be if it’s Wind 240, take runway 24 if there is one, and your compass in the plane will be reading 240 degrees.

Thanx for the lesson, maybe my English is a bit confusing, to lay this at rest, if you were the pilot here looking at the windsock which way would you turn to get to the runway and take off, left or right ? The runway is in the background.

Ground tells me to turn right

ah, this is very different than your first question. Of course you want to take off into wind.

I would check that windsock is pointing in the right direction. Google “msfs windsock direction” and you’ll see why.

B21 is correct. If the winds are 240 then runway 24 would be the correct choice. In this photo, if the windsock is correct you should make a right turn onto the runway if it was directly in front of you. Like B21 said though, there was an issue with windsocks being pointed in the wrong direction in MSFS so make sure to check that.

Okay - So , I tested the windsocks with weather in the sim, they worked, I tested them with the weather from the world map they worked, decided to do the following:

  1. Deleted all Frequencies

  2. Deleted Tower

  3. Deleted Wind Socks (Just in-case :face_with_peeking_eye: )

  4. Rebuilt ALL

  5. Re-Inserted Frequencies

  6. Added new Windsocks

  7. Added a New Tower

  8. Rebuilt All

  9. Edited the XML Windsocks to show Directions of “0” Deg (Just In Case :face_with_peeking_eye: )

  10. Rebuilt All

I tested the windsocks with weather in the sim, the world map they worked as before and happy days ahead, Ground now selects the correct runway!!!

I am not sure if the windsocks ever played a roll in GROUND selecting the incorrect runway, but the problem is RESOLVED.

P.S. B21, I have ticked your message regarding the Windsocks as the solution because that is all I did differently to the ‘hundreds of rebuilds’ I did before posting this question.

Thanx for your interest Guys
