How to enable shadow casting for legacy light effects (.fx)?

I am currently working with legacy FSX .fx light effects in MSFS2020. In the DevMode effect editor, there is a checkbox “Cast Shadows” which enables the light effect to cast shadows. However, this option does not persist — once I close the editor, the setting is lost.

I have checked the .fx files but I cannot find any parameter that would control shadow casting. It seems that the legacy format does not support this feature, but since the editor exposes the option, I wonder:

  • Is there any way to permanently enable shadow casting for legacy .fx light effects?
  • If not, is there a recommended workflow to migrate such effects into the new VFX system while keeping them functional as lights with shadows?

This was done for debugging/prototyping purposes but was not supposed to end up as a proper .fx parameter.
This was entirely removed in MSFS 2024.
