MSFS2024 SU1 WPR files being re-written

We’ve noted locally-installed WPR presets being read/renamed/rewritten in a recent update to the SU1 Beta.

This is understandable given the implementation change to the WindLayerAltitude at ground level no longer halving the wind speed and it automates the migration of WPR files. So the renaming (which uses the <Name> field from the XML rather than the original filename) is a relatively trivial inconvenience. Updating the version="1,4" in the outermost element might be a small improvement that would be helpful.

For gliding we have approx 120 ‘standard’ WPR files that necessarily manipulate the weather to compensate for some serious flaws in the Asobo vertical air movement (mainly the slope lift having no vertical limit), so we’re probably more sensitive to WPR file changes than most, but accommodating these unexpected WPR file re-writes shouldn’t cause us an issue at all. The approach gives us the simple option of creating new presets for SU1+ and move on from here. Of course we design the WPR files to work around whatever quirks Asobo put into the weather, and were able to do that relatively easily with the ground level wind being halved. It’ll be interesting to have a look and see what the new wind profile is.

While adjusting the wind speed at ground level is welcome, to put it bluntly this is a very small weather issue compare to the catastrophic effect of the clouds being randomised in multiplayer.
