MSFS2024 SU3 Beta crashing when thumbnails are created

Version: SU 3 beta

Frequency: Frequently

Severity: High
(Low - quality of life, workflow optimization, rare enough to not impact production, etc…
High - critical but workarounds are available, important feature not working as expected, frequent enough to impact production
Blocker - prevents from working on the project, prevents from releasing the product)

Bug description: SU3 Beta is crashing after I produce my thumbnails. I tried two different projects to confirm it was not based on a specific project.

UPDATE: Sometimes it works without crashing but usually crashes the second or third time if it does not crash the first time.

Hello @Flysimware

Can you try using the last 1.5.9 SU3 flighting ?
I tried with the da62 sdk but could not reproduce the issue (I tried few times to be sure).

Regards,
Boris

I used the latest SU3 beta 1.5.9 and yesterday 1.5.10. I think the issue is because I am using a tail dragger with a ton of angle. So maybe go that route to test.

I found if you load the thumbnail creator and you still in preflight mode this causes this error.

But not in preflight works. But after producing the thumbnails they turned out good but the sim crashes. I used a default plane this time. The Junkers. So maybe it’s the tail dragger, or maybe not. I found the other day i was able to create 5 sets of thumbnails before crashing. So it seems like a hit and miss to pin point the bug.

I tried in flight / in preflight,
So far, I don’t have any repro.

It seems to me that you are using a custom made preset, am I right ?
Can you share it with us (see How to report a bug or crash if needed)

Also can you send us the RAI archive ?

Regards,
Boris

Hi @Boris

After setting the RAI to generate report after crash nothing opens after i restart after the crash.

Here is the template I use.
AircraftCaptureToolConfig.xml (1.7 KB)

I tried with the template but I still can’t reproduce.
Can you follow this guide to enable the full dump generation when the ctd occurs and then send us the dmp file ?

Thank you,

Regards,
Boris

Hi @Boris,

I loaded the default Junkers, used the same thumbnail template I shared and it crashed after it created all the thumbnails. And I created a dump file as you explained and will send it by personal message.

Hello @Flysimware ,

Please make sure to enable only TAA in the graphics settings and disable any software-based vendor antialisiasing like frame generation such as DLSS or FSR etc..

Let us know if the crash still occurs after these changes.

Boris

I always keep the anti-alisiasing off since I develop all day and prefer performance. Will test TAA. Never used DLSS or FSR before.

Hello @Flysimware

Were you able to confirm this is no longer happening with the suggested options?
We were able to replicate this on our side, but only when FSR frame generation was enabled with an Nvidia GPU.

Regards,
Sylvain

Last week It worked with another project of mine. But it already is a hit and mis. So today using TAA I tested two projects. My N24 and the DA62 SDK. Both created the thumbnails with no issues but both crashed the sim after it finished.

You can still have anti aliasing set to TAA but frame generation set to FSR:

Make sure this is not the case.
AFAIK, frame generation is the problem, not anti aliasing.

Sylvain

I have tried everything. Still happens. I noticed a message appeared stating could not read memory then after closing that window there was another window that showed visual studio 2017 and 2019. I have both of these installed and active for the SDK.

Maybe these clues will help.

Hello @Flysimware

Can you please send us your UserCfg.opt file located in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024\ ?

Sylvain

Send to you in a DM.

Can you double check? We don’t see anything

I now understand how another private message was not noticed. I was pinging you in the message but not adding you as an invite. You should now have 2 messages. I sent another for another topic that you requested files.

Hello @Flysimware

From what I can see in your graphics settings, Frame Generation is still set to FSR.
Rather set it to DLSS or None.

Regards,
Sylvain

Hi @FlyingRaccoon

I had the wrong setting for DSLL, I had the Anti-Aliasing set to DSLL. The frame generation was not available. I found I had to turn on hardware accelerated GPU scheduling turned on from windows.

So far no crash. Thanks!
