"Select Mesh" Option Missing From Light Preset

Version: SU/AAU/WU XX - 1.8.11.0

Frequency: Consistently

Severity: Blocker

Bug description: The “Select Mesh” button seems to be missing from the lightrow light presets sutup.

Repro steps: Make a new light preset and try to add a custom mesh/model

Attachments:

I am sure it was there previously? Did you move it somewhere else or is this a bug?
Previously:

it is also there in the SDK documentation

So I tried to manually add the GUID in the bgl which then leads to the mesh showing in the selection menu and it brings back the “select mesh button” in the presets tab, but the mesh itself does not show up in the lightrow - only the light does. Adding a new light preset is the same as shown above where I don’t have the select mesh button - long story short: that also does not work

I then added a default light row and there the mesh also does not show up, only the lights do. Is this a regression again from when lightrow meshes did not show?

Update:

I tried a lot of different combinations of troubleshooting steps now and all I found that something is very wrong but I don’t know what - which leads me to believe this must be a sim related bug.

So, as shown above I tried it in the project I am currently working on and it obviously does not work. That was on SDK version 1.6.6 and sim version 1.8.11.0

I then thought the project was messed up so I created a clean new project and tried there. Same result. Making a new light preset did not show the select mesh option, and placing a default one did not show the meshes.

After that I thought the issue was teh SDK version I was on so I update to the latest SDK again (1.7.2), however, exact same result.

I then checked our last project and the currently placed lightrows that I made when we made the scenery do show up as they should and work as they should. However, adding a new light preset gives me the same not-working result as above with no select mesh option. I then deleted only this new lightpreset and all of the working ones suddenly disappeared!

I don’t know what’s wrong, all I know that something is wrong, and majorly so!

This needs to be adressed please otherwise we cannot create taxiway lighting!

Update:

So I now tried to manually copy over the lightrow preset from our previous scenery to this one into the bgl. Then I replaced the GUID with the one of the new model. It now gives me the select mesh option but only for that light preset. If I make a new one it does not. They now also appear after ages of loading time. Whenever you edit the lightrow the models disappear for 10 - 15 seconds and then re-appear.

Also, creating said new light preset makes all of the models disappear again, but now for good and they won’t comeback until you re-build the whole project. As mentioned above something seems to be MAJORLY bugged with this atm.

I made a video showcasing the issue:
First you can see the copied lightrow with the new mesh GUID shows up, but as soon as I move the lightrow or add a new lightrow it disappears for a while until it eventually comes back. The default meshes also don’t show up. Then if I delete the new lightrow again all meshes disappear. I then add the new lightrow to show that it does not have a select mesh option, and that it also makes the models disappear again. The models never came back after making this new lightpreset until I rebuilt and reopened the project:

Like I said, it’s not a project specific issue. The same thing happens in a completely new project I just made to test this. This is rather critical if this makes it into the live build of SU6 and needs to be addressed before this goes live if it is indeed a SU6 issue.

I also asked a friend of mine to try making a new preset on SU5 and he has the “Select Mesh” option

So, after all this testing with 2 different SDK versions and across different projects and it working on SU5 this must have somehting to do with the sim itself.

Following Michael’s instructions, I managed to reproduce exactly in an empty and an copy of an SU5 project in this beta :

  • The new presets don’t have any Select Mesh button
  • Existing presets with already a mesh before still have the Select Mesh button, if you change the mesh, the button is still there after applying the change.
  • Existing presets without any mesh before won’t have the Select mesh

I also manage to reproduce the lightrow issue without actually manually modifying any GUID. I created a light row with the DEFAULT_TAXI_EDGE preset, and as soon as you use the gizmo translate, everything will just disappear like on Michael’s video and not reappear until rebuilt, but if you move it disappear again until the next rebuilt of the project.

I was using the SDK version 1.6.9 with the 1.8.11.0 build and I can confirm the issue is fully reproducible on my side.

change your bug report to a 2024 bug - ASOBO may miss it, if in wrong category

oh sorry. I hate that they have the same colours… my bad

Hello @here

Thank you for reporting the issue.
This is indeed a mistake in our ImGui code, the button will only show if a mesh with the active GUID has been found.

For the issue demonstrated in the video, this is unrelated. The placement of lights is reevaluated for the entire airport every time a segment is modified. If you have a lot of taxiways, this can take a while.
We’ll review if that’s something we can optimize.

Thanks Sylvain!

Yes, I am aware of the recalculation. However, this wasn’t as bad before. Yes it reloaded everything, but it did not take nearly as long as it does now. At our last project, which had significantly more lightrows placed compared to the amount that are placed when I recorded this video, this process took about 2-5 seconds max. Now on SU6, even with only 1 or 2 lightrows placed, it takes 10-15 seconds as shown in the video.

What I also noticed over the last 2 days is that what makes them reappear quicker (and more consistent) is to fly away briefly until a LOD of a mesh in the lightrow switched. This brings them back faster than waiting it out (this is of course a massive inconvenience and prolongs the process unnecessarily. So whilst it may not be related to the button not showing, it is definitely a regression compared to previous sim updates.

Ok, I’ll make sure this is reviewed.

Thank you for the feedback.

Sylvain
