"Surface type" location and rendering issues

Version: SU4 - 1.6.32.0 (still an issue as of the SU4 update)

Frequency: Consistently

Severity: Blocker

Context: Any instance, whether loaded from community folder or in scenery editor.

**Bug description:

This has two elements to it.

  1. When excluding default aprons and airport surfaces, their “surface type” stays behind. So in this instance where I had to relocate a taxiway and runway to match my custom aerial image, you can see the default surface type where the original pavement was (screenshot 1 shows this, and it’s extremely bad at this particular airport which was very far out of alignment). This is a very unsightly issue that I thought I could rig a fix for, except**……**

  2. Control over the “surface type” in general is terrible. I made some custom invisible materials with a set surface type to be able to combat this, but as you can see in the second screenshot, an apron’s surface type does not align with the apron itself, so it can’t be placed reliably. This is a problem everywhere, even with regular airport aprons, where you can see bits of the grass surface under the taxiway, and bits of the pavement surface type where the grass is supposed to be.

Myself and others have reported similar bugs in the past, and I’ve determined that it all comes down to issues with “surface type” and an inability to control it consistently. It would be nice to have grass where grass belongs, dirt where dirt belongs, etc.**

Repro steps: an observable behavior everywhere

I’m posting this here as it could be related. I thought this was an issue with 2020 airports in 2024, but after converting my airport (CYSH) to 2024, I can see that this is an issue with grass being suppressed way past asphalt-type surfaces.

All the bald ground patches next to the asphalt are unwanted, and happen as a result of the taxi_asphalt texture (one of three layers, the other two are cracks):

When I replace the one asphalt texture with something else like grass, it stops suppressing the grass and the grass then appears all the way to the edge. I can also verify that the asphalt texture by itself is the issue, because when I pull it back, the grass grows closer:

Hello @JonRainmanATC @Nettework

Any chance you could send us your project or at least a sample that reproduce the issue ?
