Trees/Vegetation Issues and Replacement Biomes for Scrub and Scrub Small?

Version: 1.XX.XX.X

Frequency: Consistently

Severity: Blocker

Bug description: For many of my locations these two biome were the only two that even slightly resembled the real locations on the Caribbean. Now they’ve been deprecated and no other biome can be placed that doesn’t look very sparse when you drop the tree size. A lot of the Caribbean is Scrub. Thick Bushes and small trees.

I don’t fully understand why all the trees have to be so big, and if you want to keep them big by default why can’t us developers be allowed to increase the density (beyond what is currently allowed) when we drop the size so the ground doesn’t look bare. If i put any number greater than 1 in the density box nothing changes. Aren’t many of the tree models “duplicate-linked” so to speak? How much does this really hurt performance? What are the numbers?
Accurate depicting the vegetation in FS2024 is a huge pain. Also the tree brightness slider is gone. Is there any way to get that working on the 3d trees as well?

Hello @SLH

Can you show a picture demonstrating the kind of biome you are aiming at?

The biggest issue is the size and density. There were a few biomes I were willing to use instead until I went close to the ground and realizes they’re still way too big even at the smallest setting. Then if I could get them smaller, density would probably become an issue.

Have you tried creating your own biome using the Biome Editor?
This will allow you to chose which tree species to use and specify their spawn ratio, or even create your own species.

That, combined with the Scale and Density properties of the vegetation polygon, allows to create a pretty dense shrub environment:

I’ll have a look thanks.

I cant get any of my biome to show up in the biomes list for the polygon. Am i doing something wrong? I saved and built, but it still wont show

@FlyingRaccoon When i build the biomes package i get “unlisted file” error for my simobjects sim.cfg files. But if i build my entire package normally i don’t get these errors

It tends to fail silently when the biome is deemed invalid.
That’s something I witnessed myself and reported.
In my case, this was caused by:

  • not adding trees to the biome
  • not setting ML_LOW_VEGETATION as grass surface type.

Also, make sure you reload the biomes by clicking the button in the Biome Editor or by enabling its auto reload setting.

If you still can’t see it, send me the xml file and I will let you know what’s wrong.

Sylvain

@FlyingRaccoon Still not showing

The whole biomes editor is just weird. I got it to show, but im making changes and nothing is happening. I got if i build and change stuff and basically just try everything i can , i got it to actually show what i selected once, but now its not showing that plant i have selected again. It’s a huge headaches. Especially since i’ll have to be changing the species often to see what i like…

I checked and your biome file is correct. I was able to load it.

The biomes are reloaded when building the package, clicking the “Reload” button in the Editor, or upon any modification when the “auto reload biomes” setting is enabled

Are you on the same sdk build as us? Maybe there are other bug with the current build. Could you also send me a picture of your package definition of your biome. So I make sure I have my folder structure correct.

SDK version does not play a role here, only the sim .exe matters.
The biome is visible in the newly released SU3 version.
Here’s the full project:

I got it working somewhat better by not having have the project in the community folder while working.

Edited version should always take priority.
I’ll have a look at this.

I can replicate the issue on Sim Update 3 but this no longer seems to happen with Sim Update 4.
Let’s wait for the flighting to begin and see if that’s still a problem on your side.

Hello @SLH

Biome Editor has been improved in SU4 beta and should now display errors when the edited biome cannot be loaded:
