We are slated to get updated aerial imagery for MSFS 2024, and this will require extensive modifications to aprons that were used to cover up undesirable areas, and also modifications to existing CGLs so that they blend in with new aerial imagery.
Will we get same update for aerial imagery for MSFS 2020 or will 2020 keep the old imagery? If 2020 gets updated, what will be the cutover date?
At this point, I’m putting CGL work on hold because I’m not sure what imagery my CGL should be matching with. Is today’s Bing imagery always going to match what we see in 2024, or not always? Is today’s dev alpha going to have the final 2024 imagery, OSM buildings and DEM (and also future 2020 depending on the answer for the question above)?
Good questions, I’m wondering the same. Also, Because unless i just don’t know how to, i hope there is now a way to select and entire airport; scenery objects AND all the items under the Airport hierarchy… and be able to move them at the same time. Moving the airport hierarchy separately from the scenery objects is annoying because its hard to get them perfectly aligned again, then your terraforming rectangles and polygons don’t perfectly meet your carefully elevated objects etc. It’s just way more work then it needs to be. and The sim really slows down when editing or moving polygons and aprons. Moving an airport a few feet to match new satellite imagery should be a piece of cake. Especially when it changes somewhat frequently due to the nature of the sim.
We have been told that MSFS 2024 and MSFS 2020 will share the same “world,” although I don’t know how exactly that will be implemented under the hood (if the 2024 data is supposed to have 4000x better resolution in some spots, I have to believe that MSFS 2020 will consume some subset of that data, as I assume that the engine would choke on that amount of detail).
I can’t speak to the alpha you’re using, but in the tech alpha I saw last week, the world looked the same to me. (So maybe they had some flag set in the sim to get the 2020 version of the data? I have no idea.)
With all this said, since I don’t work for either company, I would hate for you to make decisions based on what I said! So, I’ll caveat this with, this is just my understanding.
