Grass from aprons is extremely blurry in 2024

Similar MSFS 2020 issue: works fine in 2020

Bug description: Ever grass material is extremely blurry in 2024 and looks a lot worse, if not even intolerably bad, in 2024. No matter what resolution the grass texture is in, no matter if it’s a custom one or the base/default Grass_Moussa texture. I suspect this is due to the fact that it seems like the grass detail map is missing in 2024. In any case, i looks a lot worse than in 2020. The fact that there is less 3D generated grass on it in 2024 makes it even more obvious.

Repro steps: Create an apron with a grass texture in 2020 and look at the package in 24

I would appreciate if you could look into this because if it looks like that I don’t even want to say this is 2024 compatible to be honest. It looks atrocious.

Hello,

What is the package and location of your screenshots?
Are these custom CGLs, or are they the default ones?
Is your grass setting set to Ultra?
What date are you using?

@MichaelWimma-RWProfiles @Boris This MAY have to do with the texture tiling value being to large by default. I drop the number to i think 5 or so and then it looks ok.
…BUT there are still lots of issue when it comes to grass.

  1. Not being able to get grass anywhere i like, The texture is there but grass won’t appear because the sim has declared it as a road. Therefore the grass blades won’t show.


  2. Sometimes I would like grass without any base texture. It would be nice if we could control the density of grass blades separately from the opacity of the grass texture. Because currently if i want thick grass, I must completely cover up the satellite imagery with the grass texture which is undesirable in most cases.

  3. My aprons now are not excluding default grass patches

  • Package is the one I sent for the veg polies and terraforming bugs in private content
  • No CGL. Just Apron with a grass texture. Happens with default textures and custom textures. (In the pics are custom ones and the default grass_mousa)
  • Yes, grass is set to Ultra
  • Date does not matter. It is blurry regardless of the date.

Also, as far as I am concerned, the grass setting should not affect the quality of the texture?! That is only for the density of the the “3D” grass, and the texture resolution itself should be handled by the texture resolution setting, no?

this is nothing particular to this package. You can just make a grass apron with any texture in 2020 and then look at it in 2024. It will look like this. Or just check out other sceneries (like FlyTampa EHAM as I mentioned) and you will see the same result.

No, the default tiling of 25m is for most of them turned down to 5m or 10m.

And in any case, even if it was set to 25, it shouldn’t look worse than it does in 2020 which it clearly does unfortunately.

I think those two pictures show off the issue quite well if you look at the edge of the asphalt apron. It is extremely blurry without any detail map to it even though the material property is set to “GRASS” in 2020.

Ahh yes this seems to be a new issue. Haven’t experienced it yet.

Yes it is. Hopefully it’s fixed really soon. Having to release sceneries with missing or misplaced grass is just not Good.

Nah it’s not new. It’s been happening ever since the dev alpha but no one has ever reported it even though almost all 2020 packages in 24 are affected :frowning:

Here another example at our KSGF, for example. IIRC this is the default grass_mousa again. You can clearly see the extremely pixelated texture from the apron without any detail map and the cutoff to the much more detailed aerial

The same can be observed at GAYYA’s default LICJ, too. This is the normal grass there from the aerial. And this is one of their grass aprons. Again, no detail map to be found.


In general it appears that on custom aprons there is much less 3D grass than on the aerial and absolutely 0 flowers which makes them quite obvious and when used to blend something in they result in the exact opposite.

Same season, same field, same day, field next to EGZM airstrip:




The ground textures, grass elements and density of grass are big leap backwards in 2024. Draw distance in 2020 allows for a homogenous fade off of 3d grass to plain ground textures that is unnoticeable- in 2024 it’s a hard cut off.
From some altitude 2020 grass preserves an organic voluminous look whereas in 2024 it clearly turns into a unsharp texture.

Yhup!. I’ve been singing about the Grass issue from the dev alpha but still nothing. As you said the grass in Fs20 is much denser and more realistic. FS24 grass looks nice but is way too sparse. THEN on the rare occasions when i can make it dense, it’s density is linked to the opacity of the grass texture beneath which i do not want to see…sigh

Still present in SU2.

Although, as the changelog suggests, the grass is denser now, the texture itself is still blurry and does not have a detail map.
