Grass, Rocks, & Vegetation obscuring Runways and Scenery

Version: * 1.0.72.0*

Frequency: Consistently

Severity: Blocker

Marketplace package name: 42ST Sharktooth Ridge, 42BH Bluffers Hill Airstrip, 42BC Bushplane Campout, 42CM Cedar Mountain Airstrip, 42HB Hogsback Ranch Airstrip

Context: 2020 packages placed in 2024 Community folder

Bug description: Tall grass, vegetation, & rocks covering runways and areas where a polygon / apron / runway with an ‘exclude vegetation’ was placed.

Repro steps: Load the 2020 packages mentioned above.

For the rocks there’s an “exclude” box in the polygon properties. No ones figured out how to get rid of the taller grass yet.

Thanks, I’ve seen that in the 2024 Scenery Editor which is fine, but this post is specifically for the compatibility of 2020 products in 2024 without any adjustments.
I too have found no solutions to adjust, or exclude the grass in the 2024 SDK.

From my understanding is that 2020 packages won’t fully work with 24.’ You’ll have to do some adjusting to make them work with 24’ unfortunately. Especially with the new generative ground system.

Yep, however the MSobo team still want reports of anything “not working” without any adjustments, as they promised “virtually all” would. We encourage you to do the same!

to get rid of the grass i draw a polygon over the area and change the biome to semi desert cities. it gives you the nice short grass
but i agree a default compatibility would be the way to go

Backcountry strips have big problems in default sime as well. Most runways have at least some rock clusters on them, which will send you flying in a not so friendly way.
Rock need to be excluded on runways by default.

i just made my latest 2020 scenery fully 2024 compatible without touching the 2024 SDK.
I got rid of the rocks and bushes on the grass RW or basically around the whole airport by placing a polygone in 2020 and assigned the Biome “Conifer_Cold_Cities”. If you build the package (still in 2020) and drop it in to the 2024 Community folder, the grass will be nice and short and will even react on the seasons

Nice work, Annov.

It doesn’t help the “2020 sceneries can be placed into 2024 and are compatible”. Every dev would have to re-upload their package to the marketplace and other stores. That is a lot of work for some people. Fair enough if that’s what we have to do.

I really think Rocks and flowers need to be excluded from runways by default.

This is a tame example of rocks on runways. But, having that halfway down the runway is not very realistic.

fully with you, I am just trying to find workarounds. I have my doubt that everything can be fixed in the next 21 days. I guess we will not come around to touch our stuff to have it fully compatible in 2024 but at least we can start to touch our stuff already in an environment we are familiar with to have them some how ready, and once we are familiar with 24 we can continue there.

They said in the last video they will have an option to remove it but another easy way is to remove them is to add “fall out” aggressively to your polygon and the vegetation get removed.

Hello,

Do you still encounter this behavior since the last update 1.2.7.0 ?

Regards,
Boris

Hi Boris, in the latest version 1.2.8.0 the behavior of the vegetation has been fixed and is back to normal. Many thanks!

It seems like all grass and flowers have disappeared.
Nothing in my community folder. Is this a known bug?

if anyone can help… (I’m a scenery noob) .. I tried the “draw polygon and change biome to semi desert cities” which fills my polygon with bushes instead of “nice short grass”.

Just slide the vegitation density and scale all the way to the left.

Thanks - hints very much appreciated. The density/scale sliders do reduce/remove the added biome trees but leave the long grass / flowers alone.

I also tried creating a polygon without selecting a biome and setting that to exclude vegetation (in case I needed to exclude the grass in the ‘current’ biome before adding the new biome) but the long grass / wild flowers remain resolutely in place.

I also tried covering the runway in a polygon containing an asphalt material which did give me an asphalt runway but setting that with transparency had the long grass reappear.

In case it’s a clue, I created a random polygon outside the airport and ‘simply’ set that to exclude vegetation, the local trees and scrub disappeared to be replaced with lush grass / wild flowers, those things are hard to avoid…

I understand the OP was asking about long grass issues with a 2020 package in 2024, but is it certain the long grass can be removed/replaced even in 2024?

I am not soo familiar with 24sdk yet but in 2020 i was able to cut long grass by adding an apron with texture gass green 3 or something like this and make it all transparent. Maybe you can try that in 24 too

Any Apron in 2020 with full transparency, if terrain is green, set the grass to very short height. That’s quite understandable because if there is an Apron there is an Airport therefore they keep the lawn mowed

In 2024 law mowers has been dismantled unfortunately

Guess is all about the specific moment grass is generated in the rendering pipeline?
It should be so deep that the software engineers are still trying to find that line of code
In the meantime let’s enjoy lush grass and flowers, they are so cute and peaceful!

Btw Polygon vegetation to 0 (scale/density) remove also crops Crops, at least we can avoid unwanted corn :ear_of_corn:
