Hello fellow devs! I have been experiencing an issue with my country-wide
vegetation project for New Zealand whereby when loading the scenery into the
sim at the relevant location (doesn’t matter what location in the loaded
scenery) I get stutters during the first 1 minute or so then it subsides.
during this time FPS is at 1. As I mentioned, it is absolutely fine once
loaded but the stuttering is not ideal and causing continued frustration. I
believe I have applied all rules to the polygons and tiled the scenery but
still I get this issue. I have removed holes from the polygons. I have cleaned
the data so there are no topology errors. I have split the polygons into a
100km radius for each tile. Can anyone assist me as I have run out of options
here and i’m either missing something or there is a bug in the scenery
loading/caching system in the sim. I am happy to provide a copy of the scenery
to anyone that can help troubleshoot. Thanks in advance. SpritelyNZ
Thank you Dick! I think for you to get a good idea about my project I’ll need
to send you source data with the project. If you would like to chat with me
better you can connect with me at my discord channel and send me a private
message. https://discord.gg/c9NrEbhkSs If you would just like the link to
download the project I can link it via DM. Let me know how you would like to
go forward. I appreciate your support. Cheers, SpritelyNZ (Kelvin)
Hello. If you upload a link to your package as a private comment visible to
moderators only, I can have a look as well. Regards, Sylvain
Hello, Were you able to look into this issue? I’ve had Rhumbaflappy look into
it and we don’t yet have a cause. I would very much appreciate your time to
look into this one as I believe this is a bug in the Sim regarding how it
handles loading of data as the severe stuttering dissapears after some time so
if this was the data being the problem I would expect the stutters would
remain over time. Thanks in advance.
If you slew or use the camera, elevate to a few thousand meters and rotate the
heading 360 degrees ( maybe twice ), and the stuttering goes away. It seems it
is related to the loading of all the polygons (many thousands). We tried quite
a few tricks to get this to stop, and found no work-arounds.
Hello. I’ve just tested your package but I don’t witness the stuttering. I had
fairly consistent framerate overtime and not a big difference between with and
without your package. Some questions: - What are your system specs? - We
agree we’re talking about testing outside the edition mode, right? - Does the
1 minute stuttering happens on every game startup? Every flight startup? - Do
you have rolling cache enabled in your data options? - Do you have only that
package installed? - Can you enable the Option->Display FPS option of the dev
mode and take screenshots when you have the stuttering and when you’re back to
normal framerate. Regards, Sylvain
Put the package in the Community folder. The DevMode can be on or off. Start
at a parking spot at NZPI. With either slewing or the devmode camera elevate
to about 10000 ft. Now rotate sharply to right, and circle the heading 360
degrees. Massive stuttering. Rotate another 360 degrees and less stuttering.
Rotate again, and the stuttering is gone. Escape and go to main menu. Choose a
parking spot at NZRT. Repeat the elevation slew and rotate 360 degrees again.
Massive stuttering. Rotate again and again and the stuttering disappears.
Thanks Dick! Appreciate your input. Racoon, I can assure you the issue is
there, you’re likely not starting in external view and panning around. Panning
360 degrees once loaded into the sim will show this issue. The cause seems to
be how the sim is loading the data. I have this issue when testing with no
other Addons in the community folder. I have a 10900kf, 3080, and NVME storage
drives and 32 GB ram. I can say this is not related to hardware as u have had
a number of people test the addon with Nvidia 1070, 2070, and 1660 and the
same issue across the board. To replicate the issue you must be in external
view and pan around the aircraft once in the Sim and aircraft is either on the
ground or in the air. FPS is bad to start and good once the stuttering is
finished.
I’m not saying it’s not there, I’m saying I can’t reproduce it. That’s why I
try to gather as much info as I can. I tried again following
@rhumbaflappy repro steps but I don’t have any
heavy stuttering. Can you please activate the “Display FPS” option of the dev
mode and record a video of the problem until it disappears and you have normal
FPS? Regards, Sylvain
I can do this but I am very confused as many people report this issue so I
don’t see how your setup is any different. If you cannot experience the issue
then sending you a video is a waste of time as you will not be able to have
the scenery to experience the issue. Can you tell me what you could gain by
seeing this issue via a video? My fps crawls upon loading then returns to
normal once 30 or 40 seconds pass. I am an IT Engineer of 10 years and know
that troubleshooting starts by experiencing the issue. Without this, there’s
little you could do by watching a video. Surely you must see this happen,
unless your perception is that any initial stuttering is acceptable to you and
you don’t see this as a problem. I would like to in fact see a video of what
you are seeing, that way I can confirm if you are experiencing the same issue
that I see or if not then we can compare configurations. I Appreciate your
help.
We tested your package on 2 different configurations and never produced any
stuttering. A video will allow us to make sure we’re doing the same things and
will let us check what’s displayed by the “Display FPS” (which thread is
impacted for instance)
Thanks for your response. I will get some time to make a video and will post
back here along with any other info I can give you that may help you. Best
Regards, Kelvin
Pretty sure you’re busy as hell @FlyingRaccoon but i’ll bump this again seeing
it’s been 4 days since my post. Cheers mate.
Hello Kelvin and sorry for the delay in my answer. I’m unable to get your
package sources, it seems to require an account. That said, I used the first
package you sent me and did the exact same steps but am still failing to
reproduce this stuttering. - You said no addon except Flora are installed but
I can see surrounding airports being marked as custom on your world map. Is
your package supposed to include airports? - Can you also specify what’s your
GPU? - When setting your graphics options to the minimum, this stuttering is
happening the same way? What’s interesting is that your VRAM seems to increase
every time you look in the direction that produces stuttering. I don’t get
that behaviour, even with maxed out options.
@Darwikey If you can think of anything, any
additional test we could do…
Hmm not sure why you can’t retrieve the latest source data, it’s a Google
share. I’ll resend to you, it a new version I hoped would have better
performance but still I’m getting the stuttering along with a number of people
with the scenery. Albeit, the stuttering isn’t as severe after the SU7 but
still exists and it is only when viewing behind the aircraft, if I don’t pan
when loading into the flight it seems fine. There’s definately some magic
happening on your machine because I have just reinstalled windows 11 and all
drivers and nothing else and I’m getting the same behaviour so something with
the way my scenery is, is causing this issue. I’d love to know the specs of
your machine from hardware to driver versions. Oh and I use msfs addon linker
to manage addon scenery installed on an M.2 drive and so I did have a few
airports loaded but this doesn’t matter because the same behaviour exists
without them added or when not using that addon linker. So at present when
testing I have no confounding variables within my control except the scenery
itself. I’ll share my latest version with you once I setup a new link. This is
so frustrating, that I can’t have you see this problem. Maybe I need to resell
your rig with each copy of my scenery to ensure a problem free package.
sigh
Hello. If it’s just an optimized version of the first package you sent me,
nevermind, testing the first one should produce the problem anyway. I’ve
tested on 2 different config so far and will keep testing. I’ll involve QA if
necessary. I was able to reproduce some other performance issues on sceneries
so hopefully, this is related. Regards, Sylvain
Thanks for your time on this. I worked in IT for 10 years and this would
happen over and over again. Always when you need the problem to happen, it
doesn’t but this is a symptom. And yes, I agree it should in fact be
reproduced with the scenery you have. If the same product has different
effects on separate machines then we have variables that are likely to be
outside the scenery. I’ll put out a request to those who have the scenery to
get their feedback and see if there are any common denominators.
Hi SpritelyNZ, I have looked at your package, I didn’t manage to repro but I
have noticed invalid data in your vegetation xml:
1. name="no_veg" speciesInstancesPerHectar="0" artificialSurfacesScaleFactor="0.0">
2.
3. name="no_veg" spawnRatio="0.00000"/>
4.
5.
In our code, we are normalizing all the spawnRatio inside the SpeciesList, so
this data cause an infinite spawn ratio. I have fixed our code, but you can
try on your side to remove this rule and see if the freeze disappear. Regards,
Xavier
Thanks for your time on this. I will try this. However, the problem here is
that this code is to tell msfs to not place vegetation in the polygons no_veg
which I have used in the biome name field in the shapefile dbf file. So if I
remove this how would I tell msfs to exclude vegetation? If there are areas
the polygons don’t cover then the default vegetation will show so this is the
reason for no_veg. Do you have an alternative solution for this?
I have re-tested without this and I get the same performance than before as
compared to default scenery. Is there a chance this is related to your specs,
system, setup? It would be advantageous to stick some profiler on my scenery
to actually use data rather than eye-view to try and detect this issue as it
seems we have different sets of eye balls experiencing different things. This
issue has been reported by more than me so I believe it shouldn’t be a
subjective perspective. I really don’t see how you can’t experience this issue
as it is plain as day to see for me and others.
