New rotor and propeller rendering produces visual artifacts

Version: All

Frequency: Consistently

Severity: Medium
(Low - quality of life, workflow optimization, rare enough to not impact production, etc…
High - critical but workarounds are available, important feature not working as expected, frequent enough to impact production
Blocker - prevents from working on the project, prevents from releasing the product)

Bug description: With the new rendering of propellers and rotors I am experiencing visual artifacts. I am seeing them both in my own projects and standard helis as well. Due to the grey color of the standard heli rotors they are a bit less visible to the eye. That´s why I decided to demonstrate the issue on my own project because the tailrotor has a bright white and orange color.

Thanks for reporting, I’ll talk about this with our Principal Tech Artist.

Best regards,

Hey Eric,

thanks for the quick response and having a closer look at it.

3 posts were split to a new topic: New rotor/propeller not being lit at night

Any update on this issue? It also happens to the default C152

not yet, for me it is still the same in the current beta

@EPellissier Hello Eric,
I just saw this point in the release notes and was wondering if this is related to the artifacts I reported back in February or if it is something different?
I also wanted to get back to you if there are any news since the report is still classified as reviewing. Both the black rendering of the rotors at night (under bright lights) and the visual artifacts are still present for me in SU4.

Hello @b1e1n7e

My apologies, I couldn’t find any related ticket so it seems to have been overlooked.
I’ll take over the subject and will let you know as soon as this moves forward.

Regards,
Sylvain

@FlyingRaccoon Thank you very much.

@b1e1n7e Regarding the first issue you mentioned, is there an helicopter or aircraft from the base content where this is particularly visible?

It used to be present for all helicopters or aircraft that make use of the new rendering. The challenge in making it visible was the contrast of the rotor compared to the surrounding environment. For that reason I used to test it with a white rotor as demonstrated below.

Currently I am not able to reproduce it as often as in the past, today it has so far only appeared once. I will do further testing in the coming days and will try to get it recorded. There was a SU4 release note that seemed to me like it might be related to the artifacts. You can see the screenshot in the message above todays message that was directed to you. So maybe it has been adressed in SU4?

No, this was a different issue where rotor animation appeared to stutter.

Okay, I will try to get it recorded at least one time. It might take a few days tho since there is a lot of luck required in terms of timing.

Please do so with one of our own helicopter if possible.

Regards,
Sylvain

Hey Sylvain,
I was successful recording the artifacts on the h125. Hopefully that might give the team a better idea of the underlying cause.

Hello @b1e1n7e

Are you still witnessing the issue on SU5 Beta?
Our technical artists tried to investigate the issue but couldn’t replicate it.
If you have identified any conditions that increase the likelihood of replicating the issue, we are interested. If you think your package is more impacted than other, we’d be interested to have a look at it as well.

Regards,
Sylvain

Hey Sylvain,

the problem with replicating the issue is that it requires a lot of time and the artifact itself is limited to a short period of time. As described in my video, it took me about one hour of controlled flying over water to demonstrate it properly.
The nature of the artifact has been like that since release of the sim without any change lately. Unfortunately I cannot narrow down the potential causes, for that I would need to have way more knowledge about the specific rendering process, this is just not my expertise and I was hoping the technical artists would know a potential cause by looking at the appearance and location of these artifacts.
Regarding your last point, I see no difference in my own project, all helicopters making use of the new rendering are affected the same. Additionally I could confirm that other people experience it too. A developing partner of mine has seen the artifacts on his side too.

Okay so for example if you place your BO-105 in the exact same spot you used in the first video, the artifacts do not necessarily appear?

With such a low repro rate and without massive complaints from the players, I don’t think this is something that will be prioritized.
If you’re aware of any official forum thread where this is discussed, do not hesitate to share it here as this will help us raise the priority on this.

Regards,
Sylvain

If I fly with my BO 105 in the same location it will happen at some point, but not at the exact same location or time. In that regard I cannot see a pattern.
I do understand that with the appearance frequency it cannot be prioritized too much.
Maybe we can leave this bug report open for future inputs from other developers? Maybe someone has a creative idea regarding potential causes or maybe it gets more frequent at some point.
