So Jorg today on the stream anounced that World Hub going to be closed aaaand that’s all. No more details. After I asked him in chat and got an answer that World going to be closed with WU XVII most likely. What a shock that is! Because it’s less than a week! Come on!
What will happen to airport that was approved right now?
Can I make new airports until that time or should I completely stop doing it?
Hmmm, sounds like people have me to “thank” for that:
(I’m a little upset that he doesn’t remember my name, since I moderated the main forums for three years. Although at the same time, I’m also relieved because I don’t want my name said on the stream.) His characterization of our conversation is also not 100% accurate, as I didn’t ask about “my” airports, but rather, “our” airports.
I also definitely did not ask him to close the World Hub. Unfortunately, when the World Hub reopens next year, we’re still going to have an open issue about what happens when a World Update bumps up against a World Hub airport. Closing the World Hub may avoid some issues, but it doesn’t solve the longer-term problems we’ve identified in the other thread. This can and will happen, as many of our submissions involve areas of the world that have not been updated by world updates. And even if you edit a part of the world that has been updated, they’re redoing the UK and Ireland again, just as they did a second US update. So no place in the world is “safe” from a possible overwrite. (Nor should it be…if I update an airport today and nobody updates it for ten years, the system should look at overwriting some things.)
I don’t mean to start a rumor here, but I am also guessing that they are closing the World Hub to remove one more distraction so they could focus on 2024.
Don’t worry, it’s not about your airports or our airports.
About the safe place. There’re actually. I think because no one’s reading it, I can say it out loud. Russia, China for the most part of it, Middle east countries and Africa. I don’t believe that they going to make WU in South Africa but the rest of the continent will be forgotten.
I personally was making airports for Russia. Only with the community request. Developers don’t want even think about creating sceneries for that country. To me Microsoft will never approve a partnership programm at the current state, almost sure. All of this only about MSFS Marketplace and Xbox Series X|S. World Hub was a savior.
But I asked about this in previous thread smth like tell us right now should we keep doing what we doing or stop doing it at all? And you did too?
What was the answer? Yeah, sure, do it, go on. And now they’re telling that they’ll close it in 4 days! Are you kidding me? It’s 4 month till realese of MSFS 2024. Give us at least month to finish what we’ve started.
Jorg said that he’s not pushing devs for a certain date for community. What about us? Why you pushing us? Ah, don’t answer, I think I know it.
And most of it Jorg in the begining of the stream said “Oh we’ve got a slide about World Hub”. What did that slide showed us?
This is how much they don’t care because of the numbers? Nobody asked for it, but there’s tonn of request and questions ignored…I’m really sorry if I’m being rude…I’m just extremely frustrated about it.
I don’t know. I’ve been working almost full time in this world hub and now they’re telling me go for a walk for a half of the year at least.
I dunno, I’ll finish my last airport and say goodbye to World Hub and I don’t know will I return to it because what’s the point of doing it? It’s a complete waste of time. We can’t do it no more. Our airports going to be trashed. And don’t say they don’t because they are! You know better than anyone else Asobo, that moved even on a centimeter aerials going to destroy the whole airport.
I’m sorry. I know you’re frustrated. Believe me, Im frustrated, too, and not just because of the World Hub.
I agree that Microsoft will probably not do certain countries for a long time, due to political issues. But I do have faith that they will do Africa. The problem is obtaining data from governments that might not have it or might not want to give it away or might be too busy with other things.
I stopped because they wouldn’t give me help for two airports that I spent three weeks working on. I have two airports that are completely done that are never going to see the light of day. Despite giving up so much of my time to airports I don’t even fly to in the sim, in order to help others, they didn’t help me when I needed it. They didn’t help other people, too. So I stopped. It really feels like we are no longer important to them.
With only a few days left, I’ll try to squeeze in one more bug fix. But my morale is down. And with this closure, my morale will stay down for a long time. I hate going out on a low note like this.
Yeah, this is a bummer. Sounds like there WILL be a loss of some of our work. Perhaps we can come up with a suggestion for how updates should work? I’ve been wondering if it’s possible to alert us when a new aerial will offset our work or if ai can automatically make an offset adjustment, as long as it’s uniform throughout the airport.
It would be nice to know if the new aerials will be what we can see in Bing Maps (and often in the World Hub airport web page) now or if they will be completely different.
I’m super bummed about this news. I’ve spent a lot of volunteer time editing in the World Hub and have seen many airports benefit from the work. That said, there are also some issues that it’s created and those are now perhaps left blowing in the wind.
The vast majority of the general public doesn’t see/notice the discrepancies the AI created in generating the airports, but I’ve made it a mission of my streams to educate people on the realities of flying as they pertain to simming and part of that is pointing out the airport flaws every chance I get in hopes that it will eventually matter to enough people to get this stuff fixed, for the sake of improving the sim.
That said, Asobo should perhaps look at those participation numbers a different way: you’ve got a “core team” of strong editors here. Maybe instead of looking for more editors and wondering why the numbers aren’t strong, listen to those of us with experience and streamline the process and eventual outcome.
Just saw Jayne’s announcement in the main forum that WH is going to remain open until WU18 is released at the end of August.
Since that thread didn’t allow responses, let me say it here: thank you very much. That is a very reasonable gesture and allows us to finish our work without the rush and uncertainty we had.
To WH mods: if you know the final deadline by which you need submissions so you can do your mod work before it gets pushed to WU18, could you share it here, pretty please?
For MSFS2020 and the current WorldHub Function, we are mainly fixing AI works;
For MSFS2024, maybe we can do more;
But time is precious, at least I don’t have the time and energy to adjust two worlds that may be different; after adjusting more than 40 small airports in Iceland, I choose to wait for MSFS2024;
Fortunately, the expectation is that both simulators will use the same world. How they interpret the world may be interesting. I’ve done some interesting things like pushing taxiway signs together to make double-sided taxiway signs. I wonder if the new system will see these signs the same way.
